Knowledge, Skill, and Attitude.
I have experienced what is often taught as the triangle for success by several educators of business and sales. Sometimes it can even be used in an ASK acronym, which I am not found of and just seems unnatural to me. Since this is my blog we will discuss some highlights of why each of these legs of the triangle of success are important.
In an attempt to avoid recreating the wheel, I found a triangle already created that had some decent labels for me to reference. There are an infinite amount of triangles for success, I even found one that was golf specific. My intent is to prove that with these three sides supporting each other you can be successful in business.
So without further ado, the Santa Barbara County Education Office drew a triangle with three equal sides: attitudes, skills, and knowledge. The side that represents attitudes included such work ethic traits as being cooperative, having high expectations, being enthusiastic, self-confident, honest, responsible, and reliable.
The second leg of the triangle represented skills, and included abilities such as goal-setting, reasoning, time management, and interpersonal communication.
The third side, an individual’s knowledge base, included the ABC s of what that individual knows; this was the core curriculum. To quote Mike Burg, knowledge is the "Action and the practice, using wisdom and/or understanding". Unless you put what you've learned to use, it really won't do you much good.
Which of the three legs, if any, is more important to your success?
Business after business tells us that attitude is paramount. If you have an employee with a good work ethic, they can be trained to have the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job. Without that work ethic, the skills and knowledge aren’t as valuable.
In any field, or any aspect of life, to find the level of success you strive to achieve Knowledge, Skill and Attitude are required.
- Knowledge plays its role as of foundation, basic building block and also supports the other two pillars.
- Skill helps in doing things effectually and plays a very visible role in dominating over others and becoming competent (like communication and presentation skills help in convincing others and taking the edge)
- Attitude plays a front line role and is a major driver for converting potential energy into Kinetic energy. There is a proverb that can be widely applied from everything from business to sports; attitude drives to altitude.
Knowledge and skill define the area of expertise, specialization and field in which you are playing. To be the champion in your field, you have to strengthen these pillars also not only by gaining knowledge and mastering skills but also being creative, which will help in exploring new areas, new knowledge. Creativity and innovation has played major contribution in the lifes of individuals and nations for taking edge; it has proved to be the only short cut available for success.
